The Tall Ships sail again! The Armed Forces have a long tradition of participating in the world famous Tall Ships Races. The Ships gather every summer, in major European ports to celebrate the thrill of sailing on and with the largest sailing vessels afloat.
We at JSASTC are proud of the fact that we have entered our yachts in nearly every race since the early 1980’s with the result that hundreds of young Service men and women have experienced the exhilaration of sailing in company with Sail Training vessels from around the world. Many of the participants are under the age of 26 and are either navy cadets, sea cadets, from organisations that encourage disadvantaged young people to go sea such as the Ocean Youth Trusts, London Sailing Project etc. and members of the Armed Forces.
Once the vessels arrive in port the crews can expect a festival atmosphere with entertainment, team sports, sightseeing and fireworks! The ships then leave port and race to the next destination.
This summer, the ships and yachts will gather in Antwerp, race to Aalborg in Denmark, on to Kristiansand, Norway and finish in Hartlepool. We split the races into 2 week legs with crew changes in most of the above ports. We plan to enter one Nicholson 55, HMSTV DASHER, which has a capacity for 10 crew plus the skipper.
The dates of the Legs are:
Leg 1 Gosport to Antwerp. 2 – 12 July
Leg2 Antwerp to Aalborg 13 – 22 July
Leg 3 Aalborg – Kristiansand - Hartlepool 23 July – 7 Aug
Leg 4 Hartlepool – Gosport 8 – 20 Aug
Applications are invited from individuals, units, UOTC’s, training establishments etc. The criteria for entry to the race is that 50% of the crew are aged less than 26 years. The individual cost is likely to be in the region of £250.00 to cover entry fees, air fares and transport and crew shirt..
A Project Officer will shortly be appointed, but in the meantime contact JSASTC on the above number for further details. |
