Caribbean Endeavour 2010 - 2011

On October 25th, our Challenge 67, ENDEAVOUR,  will set sail from Gosport  to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands before changing crews for  the transatlantic trip to St Lucia, where the yacht will be based until the following April.

Caribbean Endeavour is a regular exercise for us, however in previous years the vessel has used Antigua as an operating base. We have changed the routine this time as we believe that St Lucia will give us more scope for planning trips both north and south in the West Indies

Tall Ships Race 2010

We at JSASTC are proud of the fact that we have entered our yachts in nearly every race since the early 1980’s with the result that hundreds of young Service men and women have experienced the exhilaration of sailing in company with Sail Training vessels from around the world.

Many of the participants are under the age of 26 and are either navy cadets, sea cadets, from organisations that encourage disadvantaged young people to go sea such as the Ocean Youth Trusts, London Sailing Project etc. and members of the Armed Forces.

A NEW YACHT FOR JSASTC

JSASTC  have acquired a new yacht!  Before you get too excited it is not exactly new  but an  acquisition from the Army Sailing Association, namely “REDCOAT”. The yacht is an extremely well maintained Sigma 38 and will join our fleet of sail training craft from the beginning of April 2010.

Once acceptance trials are complete, defects progressed and modifications are incorporated , Redcoat will be MCA coded as a Category 2  yacht for a total of 8 crew. However it is recommended  that 6 is a comfortable number for cruising.

Skippers with a Yachtmaster Offshore qualification may bid for the yacht in the normal way and take it away provided the crew includes a minimum of a Day Skipper as mate, one Competent  Crew and three others who may be novices.

Prior authorisation should be obtained from the Fleet Operations Manager, Vaughan Marsh, should you wish to enter Redcoat in any type of racing, from round the cans to the Fastnet. In this case the minimum crew for an offshore race will be Yachtmaster as skipper, Coastal Skipper mate and two Day Skippers as watchleaders.

For availability give Lynne, the Fleet Operations Assistant, a ring on Portsmouth  Naval Base ext 65971.

The Joint Service Adventurous Sail Training Centre (JSASTC) will deploy three Challenge 67 Sail Training Vessels (STV) from Gosport on a year long circumnavigation of the globe, planned to include participation in the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race in December 2009 and Antigua Race week in May 2010.  All circumnavigation legs will be conducted as AT expeditions and will be either cruises in company or races in the spirit of Corinthian competition with the emphasis on safety, seamanship and teamwork

Course Changes

From 1 February 2010 all Competent Crew and Day Skipper (Practical) courses will finish at 1800 on Friday and personnel will be required to vacate the Sail Training Craft.
Those who do not wish to travel Friday evening will need to book accommodation at Fort Blockhouse.

STC Handover Changes

From 1 February 2010 and for a trial period of 3 months, the requirement to personally hand back STC on Monday morning to a member of staff will cease. Skippers will be able to clean and prepare the STC for handover before leaving JSASTC during the weekend.

It is in everybody's interest that the normal high standard of cleanliness is still maintained. Therefore specific handback arrangements will be necessary.

Full information and briefing will be provided at takeover.

Important !

Nicholson 55 Crew Complement

Stowage on the Nicholson 55 has always been a problem, especially since we converted to the 275 Newton Lifejacket. The sheer bulk of 12 lifejackets and 12 sets of foul weather clothing plus boots makes the wet locker a battleground at the best of times. We are also damaging the lifejackets by pulling them through the hanging foulies.

Therefore we have decided to convert the mate’s bunk into a separate wet locker leaving the original solely for the lifejackets and man overboard lifting strop.

The knock - on  from this is that we have to reduce the total complement of the Nicholson to 11.  So if you intend to bid for a Nicholson STC in future, please bear this in mind.
